Some verbs have a different meaning, depending on whether they're followed by a gerund (V + ing) or an infinitive (to + V).

1)  stop + V + ing   (quit doing something)

stopped eating so much candy, and now I feel much healthier.

2)  stop + to + V     (stop, then do something)

I was feeling sleepy, so I stopped to buy a coffee on my way to school.

3)  remember + to + V /   forget + to + V   (something you must do)

He forgot to meet his coworker for lunch, so he got an angry phone call from her later.  (He needed to meet his coworker)

My teacher was happy that I remembered to make up my homework after I was sick and missed classes.  (I needed to make up my homework.)

4)  remember + V + ing   /   forget + V + ing   (a memory or a time)

remember falling down the stairs when I was four years old.  I cried for just a minute.  (I remember that time.)
